The story is told in first-person, from Holland’s point of view. Calvin is in the United States illegally and Holland, who is hiding the fact that she has a crush, offers to marry Calvin so that he can apply for legal residency and thus be eligible for a major role in the orchestra of a hit Broadway play (think Hamilton levels of hit). Holland, our heroine, has a crush on Calvin, a busker. Roomies, a contemporary stand-alone romance by Christina Lauren, is sweet, comforting, and sexy. The book exists in a space entirely its own, without a larger context. For this first review, the lens is very, very close to the book. The clearest way to describe these two reviews, which are at odds with one another, is to imagine viewing them through a zoom lens. The other was of pure, blinding rage brought on by the political and social issues that currently crowd my brain. One was great enjoyment in a lovely romance with great characters and dialogue and a comforting fairy tale atmosphere. Reading Roomies was a bizarre experience. Theme: Forced Proximity (stranded, safehouse, etc) Her mother's shock and horror sends Kaye back to the world of Faerie to find her human counterpart and return her to Ironside. Miserable and convinced she belongs nowhere, Kaye decides to tell her mother the truth-that she is a changeling left in place of the human daughter stolen long ago. Now Kaye can't see or speak to Roiben unless she can find the one thing she knows doesn't exist: a faerie who can tell a lie. But when Kaye, drunk on faerie wine, declares herself to Roiben, he sends her on a seemingly impossible quest. Uneasy in the midst of the malevolent Unseelie Court, pixie Kaye is sure of only one thing-her love for Roiben. In the realm of Faerie, the time has come for Roiben's coronation. This is the 3rd Faery Tale book by Holly Black, though it's actually a sequel to the first book, Tithe, with the intervening title, Valiant, being more of a stand-alone. This book is very sympathetic to Orchid and shows how she struggled with the isolation of living in the forbidden city, how she had to deal with the treachery of the other wifes, and how she had to work out the scheming of the eunuchs. Orchid ends up having a son for the emperor and rises to be the most powerful woman in China. She is not lost in the mix of the 3,000 concubines the emperor also has available to him. The trials they endure to achieve this position is interesting. Not only does she end up making the initial cut, she ends up being one of the six wives of the emperor. She decides to try and compete for a position as a concubine for the Emperor. When her uncle tries to force Orchid (Tzu Hsi) to marry his mentally disabled son. She travels to Peking with her family to bury her father and ends up living in squalor with her “10th uncle”, mother and siblings. She is the daughter of a governer of a very poor province. Tzu Hsi starts out as a girl from an impoverished family. This book is a fictional account of the rise to power of the Dowager Empress of China Tzu Hsi. I downloaded it from audible as an audio book. I heard an interview with the author of this book on the radio and it sounded really interesting. This is a different book from what I normally read.
